Any of the following actions can cause links from plans or work items to versioned artifacts to become invalid:--> changes as mentioned below should cause in minimum a warning to the user to check for the right version of linked artifacts.
The association between the configuration and the global configuration changes.
The mappings specified on the Configuration Management > OSLC Link/Attribute Mapping page of the project area editor change.
The value of the work item attribute, such as Found In or Planned For, that is used to determine the global configuration changes.
The association between the release and the global configuration changes.
The association between the release and the iteration changes.
A user ignores the effective global configuration when creating a link from the Quality Management or Requirements Management project area.

In addition to these list of actions, additional actions which can change the configuration selected (and therefore the version selected) include:
    - modifying the contributions of the associated global configuration
    - in case the configuration is a stream, any modification to that stream that modifies the version selected for a linked artifact.
To warn the users every time they perform one of these actions is very likely to result in a constant stream of warnings that would immediately have tobe silenced.
We could limit the warning to the subset of actions that are performed less frequently, but I expect the guidance suggested in that warning would always be ignored.

We are doing some exploration work for GC linking in [CCM] [Exploration] Review the cardinality of the release<->global configuration relationship and honor global configuration context in EWM for work item and plan link traversal (419069) those changes do not make any major difference in the use case for this RFE. We are accepting this onto our Backlog for exploration post the completion of the new proposal for GC link.
Note: This work might required changes beyond Tracking and Planning and EWM.
