Please provide an up-to-date eclipse client (e.g. 4.36)

More and more customers are moving to other development environments because IBM ELM only supports the 4.23 eclipse client.

We currently use / would like to use 3 different products that need improvement:

  1. EWM / RTC plainJava library - used to access IBM ELM API directly
  2. EWM Eclipse Plugin (p2 repository) - used to include in Eclipse Client to establish connection to IBM ELM
  3. Eclipse Client provided by IBM in context of ELM (Client for Eclipse 4.23 IDE)

Details:

regarding 1.:

plainJava lib contains outdated versions of libraries that contain multiple vulnerabilities -> significant security risk

dependencies for other plugins can not be resolved (version conflict) due to outdated versions in plainJava lib (significant version differences)

regarding 2:

Plugin does not work with newer versions of Eclipse (e.g. 4.36)

main problem: maven2eclipse plugin (m2e) in version 2.x is not working properly with EWM Eclipse plugin (that depends on version 1.x)

we need to use newer versions of Eclipse due to requirement to use Tomcat 10.1 or later (11.x) based on our UI development framework's dependencies - Tomcat 10.0 and before are no longer supported

in near future we need to upgrade to Java 21 that is currently not supported at all

regarding 3:

Eclipse 4.23 is outdated (many vulnerabilities, released in 2022 - also named Eclipse 2022.03) - current version is Eclipse 2025.06 (4.36)

does not support Maven out of the box

does not contain Webserver support out of the box (supported Tomcat versions)

EWM 7.1 SR1 and later now support Eclipse 4.36 client with Java 21. Note: Eclipse 4.36 is supported via a p2 install.

    Request 1.:
plainJava lib contains outdated versions of libraries that contain multiple vulnerabilities -> significant security risk
dependencies for other plugins can not be resolved (version conflict) due to outdated versions in plainJava lib (significant version differences)
IBM Response- We endeavour to update our product dependencies to address vulnerabilities (ref: <IBM trust page>). The release planned at the end 2025 (7.2) will use Java 17 and include updated library versions. You can download EWM 7.2 milestone 12 or later from jazz.net to test with the updated libraries.

    Request 2:
Plugin does not work with newer versions of Eclipse (e.g. 4.36)
main problem: maven2eclipse plugin (m2e) in version 2.x is not working properly with EWM Eclipse plugin (that depends on version 1.x)
we need to use newer versions of Eclipse due to requirement to use Tomcat 10.1 or later (11.x) based on our UI development framework's dependencies - Tomcat 10.0 and before are no longer supported in near future we need to upgrade to Java 21 that is currently not supported at all
IBM response - We announced support for Eclipse 4.36 through p2 install for 7.1 SR1 (we support use of Java 11/17in the Eclipse client). The EWM Ideas Review board will look into supporting Java 21 with Eclipse 4.36 as an uncommitted candidate for an upcoming or future release.

    Request 3:
Eclipse 4.23 is outdated (many vulnerabilities, released in 2022 - also named Eclipse 2022.03) - current version is Eclipse 2025.06 (4.36)
does not support Maven out of the box
does not contain Webserver support out of the box (supported Tomcat versions)
IBM Response: We provide an Installation Manager repository for the minimum supported version, which for 7.1 SR1 is Eclipse 4.23. We plan to provide an IM repository for 4.31 when we release  EWM 7.2 (currently scheduled for the end of 2025). We cannot provide an IM repository for all supported Eclipse versions. As mentioned in request 2, Eclipse version 4.36 will be supported through a p2 install. Watch for future updates; at times, we do announce support for additional Eclipse versions in iFixes that can be installed through a p2 install.
