RPE template comparison function

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

RPE template comparison function is missing.

When editing an existing RPE Template (.dta), or reviewing an evolution, it is impossible to highlight changes since previous version or differences with other templates.

I don't know how you can possibly claim that this is "delivered" 😂. The suggester was asking for the ability to compare two templates (which as you say can be large and complex as XML files) in order to understand what the changes are between versions. It's a very valid request, needed by many (including me) as you can see by the votes, and you currently have effectively no solution for it.

At the very least, please be honest and reject the request, and explain why.

No problem, I will summarize the solution:
? Document comparison is simplified for configuration aware documents only (limited to word output type), User can compare two documents generated from two configuration-contexts of an artifact
? A new Configuration selector is added for selecting Base Config, in DataSource properties ?OSLC Base Configuration Selection?? upon selecting Base Config the URI for selected config would be populated in newly added DS property ?Base Configuration-Context?
? Results pop-up shows three documents: Target, Base and Comparison document

? Base document would be generated using the same template, used for target document generation
? Existing functionality of comparing a word document (from Word Output Type properties) with generated target document is also there
? If user selects a Base word doc in Word Output properties and also selects a Base configuration-context, then comparison document would be generated against the Base document generated from Base configuration-context
? Base document will be generated using the first datasource having Base config set, in case of multiple datasources with Base config set
? All the output files will be generated under the same folder :
    - <target_doc_name>.doc
    - base_<target_doc_name>.doc
    - compare_<target_doc_name>.doc

Hello, we are reviewing some RFEs and we saw there is no answer from the two previews comments.
Could you please see Publishing plan item https://jazz.net/jazz04/web/projects/Rational%20Publishing%20Engine#action=com.ibm.team.workitem.viewWorkItem&id=62094 which is work underway for the next release. Will this meet your needs?

Product - IBM Engineering Lifecycle Optimization - Publishing (formerly Rational Publishing Engine- RPE)
    Component - Unassigned

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:

RPE template dta is an archive file. Once you extract it, you would see template.xml. This is a large and complex XML file. However, you could compare two template by comparing their XMLs. You would need to understand template.xml to an extent to be able to understand the difference. In addition, there are two alternatives to help you in your request:

    1) RPE is delivering "Live Document preview" functionality (https://jazz.net/pub/new-noteworthy/rpe/6.0.6/M3/index.html) where you can preview document output as you are building your template

    2) Document comparison could use to compare generated word document from previous version of template to current version of the template. More details https://jazz.net/blog/index.php/2017/06/23/generate-comparison-document-with-rational-publishing-engine/

Due to available options, there are no plans to provide your specific request.
