Readability enchancement for external variables

Context: More users use or will use Document Builder as the main tool for publishing specifications instead of the thick client. The templates have a lot of external variables which values they can change, and some users have ten or more modules to publish in one report (division of the specification in several modules for reutilization).

Problem: When we have a lot of variables or we duplicate templates in the same report for modularity reasons, the "Specify variables" tab become hardly understandable because :

  • We easily loose track of which template the variables are from and for what use
  • When duplicating templates, the variables have the same name with no indication of which template it is from
  • Even with the filter field that is added in 7.2.0, it could be hard for users to find the variables : they do not necessarily know the variables name

Impact: Users cannot easily identify the source template of the external variables or their use, this can lead to incorrect documents and is not user-friendly, even with the description

Goal of the idea: Enhancement of the readability of Document Builder interface

Why it is useful ?: Allows users to have a better experience using the tool, avoids multiple runs of the same document because of mistakes

How should it work ?: Some ideas :

  • Drop down menus (one for each template)
  • The connection that is used for each template written somewhere
  • Having a "category" property in each variable definition, in document builder the variables would be grouped by category
