DNG ReqIF Export shall export a meaningful preview image for embedded files (MS Office files + PDF)

Description

DNG ReqIF Export shall export a meaningful preview image for embedded files in DNG (MS Office files and PDF) to ReqIF. A meaningful preview image means that the image shall not be a generic placeholder image (e.g. question mark), but shall show a preview of the embedded file similar to what the user sees in DNG (either an application-specific image (e.g. MS Word icon) or a screenshot of the content.

This shall be implemented at the minimum for the following MS Office file types and PDF:

  • Word

  • Excel

  • PowerPoint

  • Visio

  • PDF

Motivation / Reason

Current behavior:
DNG ReqIF Export exports a picture with only a question mark as the preview picture for embedded files (various Office files and PDF). If this ReqIF is then imported, users can no longer see at a glance what type of embedded file it is / can no longer see a preview of the embedded file's content in their RM Tool.

The ReqIF Implementation Guide 1.7 states on pg. 16 regarding the image that must be exported together with an embedded file to ReqIF:
"The image can fall in one of three categories: (a) a generic placeholder image (e.g. question mark); (b) an application-specific image (e.g. MS Word); (c) a screenshot of the content. Any of these is allowed, but implementors are encouraged to show as much information as possible."

Currently, DNG ReqIF Export has implemented option (a). As the ReqIF Implementation Guide states, 'implementors are encouraged to show as much information as possible'. This should be implemented at least for commonly used file formats such as common MS Office file types and PDF. These file types already have proper preview images when embedded in DNG, so user expectation would be that they also have proper preview images in ReqIF.
