When embedding images (or artifacts in general) in other artifacts, the artifact that embeds the image knows about the embedded artifact and you can e.g. open this artifact. The embedded artifact is just located anywhere and does not know anything about being embedded anywhere. As there is already an "embeds" link predefined in DNG and there is an option to set such an embeds link between an artifact and its embedded artifact, the tool shall (a bit similar to "Term Reference")
