IDEA: [Report Builder] Enable opening approvals in the web interface from reports

Context:
When using Report Builder, the “Work Item Approval” element does not open the approval in the ELM web interface.

  • LQE provides a URL, but it points to an OSLC XML resource.

  • Data Warehouse provides no URL for approvals.

IBM Support confirmed on 22/05/2026, through a PMR, that this is the current product behavior.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Create a report using LQE and the Work Item artifact type.

  2. Add: Work Item --> Approvals (Required) --> Work Item Approval.

  3. Include default columns, including URL (Work Item Approval).

  4. Run the report.

Result: the approval appears as a hyperlink. A reproduction video is available for reference: “ReportBuilderIssueReproduction Video.mp4”

Problem Description:
When clicking the “Work Item Approval” hyperlink, the user is redirected to an OSLC/REST XML endpoint instead of the ELM web interface.
Because the URL attribute is added automatically when inserting the Work Item Approval element, standard users naturally expect the link to open the approval in the web UI.
The XML output is not usable for standard users, so the default hyperlink should redirect to the approval’s web interface rather than to a technical XML page.

Impact:

  • Slower report analysis

  • Extra manual steps

  • Reduced fluidity between Report Builder and EWM

  • Inconsistent user experience across ELM

Goal:
Allow approvals to open directly in the ELM web interface from Report Builder reports, regardless of the data source.

Why it is useful:

  • Faster access to approvals

  • Fewer manual operations

  • Better consistency across ELM tools

  • More actionable, user‑friendly reports

How it should work:
Report Builder should expose the information needed to generate a web‑UI link for approvals, independently of the underlying data source.
