Consistency in automatic Test Plan assignment when executing Test Cases in ETM (Run vs. Run Offline)

In ETM, when executing a Test Case from the context of a Test Plan using Run, the TCER creation window automatically selects the Test Plan and does not allow modification. This ensures traceability and consistency.

However, when executing a Test Case using Run Offline, the Test Plan is not automatically selected. The user must select it manually and, if they forget, the TCER will be created without any Test Plan associated. This leads to multiple issues:

  • Execution results are generated without linkage to a Test Plan.
  • Once created, the TCER’s Test Plan cannot be modified, leaving the information inconsistent or unusable.
  • The traceability logic between plans, test cases, and execution results is broken.

Impact

  • Loss of traceability between results and Test Plans.
  • Difficulty in managing quality, metrics, and reporting.
  • High risk of human error due to manual selection in a process that should be automatic and consistent.

Proposed Enhancement

The Run Offline functionality should behave the same as Run regarding Test Plan assignment:

  • The Test Plan from which the execution is invoked should be automatically assigned to the TCER.
  • Once created, the associated Test Plan should not be editable, ensuring consistency (just as in Run).

This guarantees coherence, prevents errors, and maintains the required traceability in ETM.

Benefits

  • Consistent behavior between Run and Run Offline.
  • Eliminates human errors caused by manual selection.
  • Ensures data traceability and quality for reporting.
  • Reduces rework and prevents results from being left unlinked.

Thanks!!
