Allow bulk category updates even if some related subcategories remain unassigned

Hello,

In ETM (Engineering Test Management), when working with hierarchical category and subcategories structures, we sometimes want to apply a bulk update of the main category to a group of artifacts.

However, when trying to do this, ETM blocks the update if any of the subcategory levels are left as "Unassigned", and shows the message:

"You cannot set the category value as Unassigned in the bulk update."

See the attached image for reference.

1. Problem

  • This means we cannot apply a partial update — for example, setting one category or subcategory — even though that’s a valid use case for many projects.
  • You can do this in one artifact, but not with the bulk update option
  • This prevents us from organizing large numbers of test artifacts quickly, especially in early phases where not all values are known yet.

2. What I propose

  • Users can assign a parent category value even if subcategories remain unassigned.
  • A warning can be displayed, but the update should still be allowed (perhaps with a checkbox like “Allow partial assignment”).
  • Validation should only enforce this if the category type has a strict dependency rule (currently not configurable).

Thanks!!!
