Automated Energy Estimation Using Province‑ and Country‑Level kWh/ft² Intensities

We want to leverage our own reported energy consumption data to calculate energy intensity proxies based on total reported energy consumption divided by total square footage for corresponding locations. Specifically, we calculate intensity metrics (e.g., kWh/ft²) at the provincial level within Canada and at the country level globally, using locations with complete fiscal‑year data with no closures or openings.

These provincial‑ and country‑level intensities are then applied to locations that do not have full‑year energy data, using each location’s square footage to estimate annual energy consumption. This proxy‑based approach allows us to generate consistent and defensible estimates for data gaps while maintaining alignment with our actual operational footprint.

Today, this process is highly manual. Energy and square‑footage data must be collected, aggregated, and normalized across hundreds of source accounts to calculate province‑ or country‑level intensities, which are then manually applied to individual locations. With hundreds of locations, each estimation cycle takes approximately 20 hours, and repeating this process multiple times per year (up to 12) significantly increases the manual effort and risk of error.

In addition, calculating these intensities at scale is constrained by system variable limits, forcing users to create complex, multi‑layered virtual account hierarchies to aggregate accounts in stages. This adds unnecessary complexity and maintenance overhead and makes it difficult to transparently view intermediate results such as calculated provincial or country‑level intensities without creating additional virtual accounts.

Enhancing the platform to natively support proxy intensity calculations, bulk or hierarchical aggregation at scale, and optional exposure of intermediate results would greatly simplify this workflow, improve transparency and auditability, and enable scalable, enterprise‑level energy estimation and benchmarking.

    We are looking at developing a new proxy entity in the platform that can be leveraged in virtual accounts. We are still determining where this development activity will sit on our product roadmap (Q3 or Q4).

    We will ensure that the requirements raised in this ticket will be considered. Specifically:

    • the ability to include only data from account with a complete data set for the relevant period. Eg. 12 months of data in the fiscal year (no opening or closure dates)
