IBM Sustainability Software - Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against the products and services belonging to IBM Sustainability Software. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Emissions Monitoring and Carbon Footprint Optimization

Why This Idea Is Useful

Regulatory Compliance

  • Oil & Gas companies face increasingly stringent emissions regulations globally
  • Provides automated compliance with frameworks like EPA regulations, EU Emissions Trading System, and emerging carbon border taxes
  • Reduces compliance costs and minimizes risk of penalties/fines

Financial Benefits

  • Carbon pricing mechanisms continue to expand worldwide (carbon taxes, cap-and-trade systems)
  • Enables identification of emissions reduction opportunities with highest ROI
  • Supports carbon credit generation from verified emissions reductions
  • Improves investor relations as ESG performance increasingly impacts valuation

Operational Efficiency

  • Emissions sources often correlate with energy inefficiencies and equipment problems
  • Identifies fugitive emissions that represent lost product/revenue
  • Enables data-driven prioritization of maintenance and capital expenditures

Competitive Advantage

  • Growing market pressure from customers and investors for "greener" energy
  • Enables verified low-carbon product differentiation
  • Supports participation in premium-priced certified low-emissions gas markets

Who Will Use It

  • Environmental Engineers/Specialists - For compliance reporting and emissions reduction projects
  • Operations Managers - To track emissions KPIs and identify performance issues
  • Maintenance Teams - To prioritize repairs based on emissions impact
  • Asset Managers - For emissions-informed investment decisions
  • ESG/Sustainability Teams - For comprehensive reporting and strategy development
  • Executive Leadership - For portfolio-wide emissions performance dashboards
  • Regulatory Agencies - Through compliance reporting interfaces
  • Third-party Auditors - For verification of emissions data
  • Investors/Shareholders - Through ESG reporting outputs

How It Should Work

Data Collection Layer

  • IoT Integration - Continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) data
  • Equipment Performance Data - Turbines, compressors, pumps efficiency metrics
  • Process Data - Temperatures, pressures, flow rates from existing SCADA
  • Manual Inputs - For non-automated sources (e.g., transportation emissions)
  • Satellite/Aerial Detection - Integration with methane detection technologies

Analytics Engine

  • Emissions Calculation - Automated emissions quantification using industry methodologies
  • AI-Based Anomaly Detection - Identifies unusual emissions patterns requiring investigation
  • Predictive Analytics - Forecasts emissions based on production plans
  • Scenario Modeling - Simulates emissions impact of operational changes
  • Carbon Intensity Metrics - Calculates emissions per barrel of oil equivalent

Optimization & Recommendation System

  • Automated Recommendations - Suggests operational changes to reduce emissions
  • Capital Project Prioritization - Ranks potential projects by emissions reduction ROI
  • Maintenance Optimization - Prioritizes repairs based on emissions impact
  • Energy Efficiency Analysis - Identifies opportunities to reduce energy consumption

Reporting & Visualization

  • Real-time Dashboards - Shows emissions by source, facility, and type
  • Compliance Reporting - Automated generation of regulatory reports
  • ESG Disclosure Support - Integration with frameworks like TCFD, SASB, GRI
  • Benchmarking - Performance comparison against industry peers
  • Executive Summaries - High-level metrics for leadership review

This solution would deliver substantial value through reduced compliance costs, operational improvements, and strategic positioning in an increasingly carbon-constrained industry landscape.

    Thanks for submitting this idea!

I want to understand the gaps on what is already implemented in Maximo HSE and the Idea you proposed. Which version of Maximo HSE are you familiar with? The reason I'm asking this is because we did implement some of what you proposed on MAS 9.0:

    1. Ability to report Fugitive Emissions in Incidents app

    2. Ability to report Continuous Emissions on Assets and Locations app

These functions are all manual input, no automatic calculations available. It's been on the market for almost a year now, did you have a chance to take a look at them?

We also have plans to implement the following functions on MAS 9.2 (June/2026):

    • Integration with Envizi GHG API for emission amount calculation, on fugitive emissions, which adds up to the item 1. above

    • Waste management profile in Assets and Locations

Would you please clarify which functions you still miss in Maximo HSE, and please be more granular on the functions you suggest to be implemented so it's easier for us to plan and tackle each one.
