RFE: API Gateway Support

Gateway API is an official Kubernetes project focused on L4 and L7 routing in Kubernetes. This project represents the next generation of Kubernetes Ingress, Load Balancing, and Service Mesh APIs. From the outset, it has been designed to be generic, expressive (Gateway API can express capabilities like HTTP header manipulation, traffic weighting & mirroring, TCP/UDP routing, and other capabilities that were only possible in Ingress through custom annotations), extensible (The resources allow arbitrary configuration attachment at various layers within the API. This makes granular customization possible at the most appropriate places) and role-oriented (The API resource model reflects the separation of responsibilities that is common in routing and Kubernetes service networking).

 

The Kubernetes community/market trend is moving away from kuberntes ingress and migrate to the Gateway API

This is not an RFE specific to our organisation, all IBM customers running MAS will benefit from this feature.

    Hi,

    Thank you for taking the time to provide your ideas to IBM. Unfortunately, after evaluating this idea, we don’t believe it aligns with our product strategy and roadmap. Therefore, we will not be considering it for inclusion in our product at this time. Thank you again for your feedback.

    Thank you for your idea.

    In our upcoming release we expect to introduce a "set up your own networking" option into our installation process, where you can can tell MAS "don't set up the routes", and instead (either manually or with our tooling) set up istio gateways in front of one or more MAS instances. With this new feature you could instruct MAS not to set up routes, and set up networking using the Gateway APIs.

    We believe this new feature will provide the flexibility and control clients are looking for over how network traffic is managed.
