BIRT and Eclipse IDE

Request Type: Directive / Security Configuration Change

Priority: High (Due to Security Directive)

Problem Description:

A directive has been issued to prohibit the use of Eclipse IDE on the customer network(s). This directive is driven by federal mandates and security concerns related to perceived risks associated with the Eclipse Foundation's governance structure.

Root Cause Analysis:

The Eclipse Foundation's board of directors includes individuals identified as having affiliations with entities that are subject to U.S. federal restrictions. This perceived influence presents an unacceptable security risk on the customer network, necessitating the prohibition of Eclipse IDE.

Impact:

  • Eclipse IDE Prohibited: No user should have access to or be permitted to install/run Eclipse IDE (any version) on the customer network.
  • BIRT Report Functionality: As a direct consequence of prohibiting Eclipse IDE, there will be no method available to create or update BIRT reports. This is a critical functional limitation that must be communicated and managed.
  • Approved Alternatives: Visual Studio Code, NetBeans IDE, and Oracle JDeveloper are approved alternatives for development activities.

Effective Date: Immediate
