Allow administrators to enter free-form expressions in ad-hoc reports

Currently, there are limitations regarding ad-hoc report expressions:

  • Expressions (SQL functions) are limited to the functions in the Expression Library (configurable).

  • The fields that are available to expressions can only by number fields, not text fields.

Those limitations make sense for non-IT users (security, complexity). However, it would be helpful if there were a way to remove those limitations for IT users (Maximo administrators). In other words, let administrators enter free-form expressions for ad-hoc reports.

As administrators, we can do that sort of thing anyway, by creating custom BIRT reports or by editing the XML/SQL of ad-hoc reports. But doing so takes a lot of work. It would be more efficient if we could enter free-form expressions (calculated fields) right in the ad-hoc report window.

For example, creating a calculated field using a SQL window function to get the total WO cost (including task cost) isn't possible right now, because the window function uses a text field (WOGROUP). That field isn't in the list of available fields.

  • sum(actlabcost + actmatcost + acttoolcost + actservcost) over (partition by wogroup)

But if free-form expressions were possible, then we could easily create a calculated field that used a text field, etc -- right in the ad-hoc report window.

Thank you for your submission. At this time there are no plans to modify this behavior but we will consider it if we re-implement ad-hoc reporting without the use of BIRT in the future.
