Protective Relay and IED Asset Lifecycle Management Functionality

Maximo should have the functionality to manage Protective Relay and Intelligent Electronic Device (IEDs) assets throughout the setting and configuration lifecycle. These types of assets rely on settings or parameter files that are physically loaded onto the devices to configure their exact functional requirements related to the systems they are controlling or protecting.

Ideally the solution should have the ability to:

  • Store settings files associated to the device on the Asset Record. These files should be revision controlled and provide the user the ability to see a list of revisions along with the uploaded files received during routine testing.

  • Parse the files into a list of settings and the associated values that can be stored in a Specification-like table structure that can be presented to the users within Maximo.

  • Utilize vendor data models for specific devices to allow users to make changes to the settings that adhere to the associated data types and ranges from those models.

  • Generate updated settings files in the vendor’s native format.

  • Implement a workflow to manage the configuration lifecycle from initial request, through engineering development, approval, commissioning, final verification, and routine testing.

  • Compare approved/installed settings file to the file received during routine testing. Changes identified between these files should result in an engineering/approval review though the established workflow.

  • Classify and track maintenance history to ensure compliance with NERC guidelines (PRC-005, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027…)

Thank you for your idea. The subject of storing relay settings within Maximo has been presented over the years. Because they are manufacture specific and also are used to provide firmware updates, they fall more into the category of 'content'. The suggestion that I discussed with IBM Consulting is utilizing our new Accelerator Catalog, where our partners (such as IBM-C) can develop industry content to enhance the Maximo Application Suite offerings. We have plans to discuss further with IBM Consulting. I am marking this a Not under Consideration, as the Accelerator Catalog offerings are developed outside the product teams.
