With large pools of models with intra-model references, it is often necessary to examine a small portion of the model. In this case it is undesirable to load the entire model due to the time it takes. The addition of a lazy load property on a reference unit [stored in the unit definition] would help shape what gets loaded or is left unloaded if a model is opened with this lazy load feature.
