Maintain the Standalone Docker/Podman MAF Tool Container for MAS 9.1+ Merged

Up until MAS 9.0, the Maximo Application Framework (MAF) configuration tool was shipped as a standalone container image (cp.icr.io/cp/manage/maf-tools) pulled from the IBM Container Registry. Developers could run this locally via Docker or Podman, access logs directly, iterate on customisations against a connected MAS instance, and work with development tools on their local machines.

In MAS 9.1, IBM replaced this with "Application Configuration", an integrated component deployed inside MAS Manage itself. While we appreciate the intent to make things more straightforward for end users, this change has been a significant step back for the developer experience when doing any meaningful customisation work for Mobile and Role-Based Applications.

Problems with the new approach:

  • With the locally deployed container, logs were directly accessible via the container engine. This is essential for any practical debugging and testing of customisation work.
  • There is no longer any local development capability.
  • The integrated Application Configuration tool is fragile in practice. Community reports since 9.1's release document broken previews, JSON parsing errors, and publish failures persisting across multiple point releases.

We request that IBM continue publishing and maintaining a versioned standalone MAF tool container image compatible with MAS 9.1.x and future releases. This is not a request to undo IBM's product direction regarding the Application Configuration component, but to preserve a critical developer-facing tool that addresses a very real and distinct workflow requirement.

Thank you for submitting your idea to IBM.

Happy to report that this is already part of the 9.2 release. There will be a VSCode plug-in for local development that can pull applications locally, allow for editing of any file locally, preview locally, and publish applications into MAS via an API key. We will also investigate making this backwards compatible with 9.1. In 9.3+, we will look at further improvements, such as using GitHub/ single pipeline deployment support.

The deliveries for upgrade are really getting affected due to the issues that we are facing with the Application Configuration. Clients are also frustrated at the point that they may move out of IBM Maximo Mobile. Hope IBM understands this at the early stage.
