Mail is not sent if subject is too long. Maximo should check and truncate subject if necessary.

Since Maximo offers the possibility to concatenate column contents (for example for the subject in communication templates), there is no check at all whether the length of the compound text exceeds the maximum length of the target field. In an example, the subject of the target column COMMTEMPLATE.SUBJECT (length: 254 characters) is composed using the WOCHANGE object as follows:

<fix text> :wonum - :description

where the content of WOCHANGE.DESCRIPTION alone can already reach the length of 320 characters and thus exceeds the maximum length of the target column (254 characters) if it is completely filled. If the composed text exceeds the maximum length of the target column, the following exception is raised:

BMXAA4049E - The specified value exceeds the maximum allowed field length for this attribute: Value....

We are aware that customers can change the length of columns in Maximo objects to fit their needs. But this is only a workaround to avoid this exception.

We suggest, Maximo should check on its own whether the target column can be filled with the desired text. If this is not possible due to the length of the text and the limitation of the target column, the excess part of the text should be truncated and not cause an exception, as it does today.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are no plans to address this in the next several releases, however there is potentially a solution that can be acheived through automation scripts.
